today, my school hosted an exhibit for suicide awareness day. the exhibit included 1,100 backpacks in representation of the number of lives that are lost to mental illness each year on college campuses. many of these backpacks were donated by the families that lost loved ones and had their stories attached. i’m so proud of my school for bringing attention to such a serious issue.

A lot of people who know me do not know that I struggled with inner demons for a long time when I was in middle school and high school. Teasing and bullying at school led me to self-loathing and I dreaded going out in public everyday. I felt unworthy of any attention or happiness, and hoped every night that I wouldn’t wake up the next morning. What an awful way to live.
When I discovered my love for music, it was if a switch had gone off. I became an entirely different person. I was smiling, I was looking people in the eyes when we spoke, I was telling stories, I was going out, I was making friends. The band I fell in love with gave me an escape from reality, all I had to do was think of their songs or look at concert photos that I kept tucked away in my binders and it made everything better. The taunts and torments were drowned out by the sound of my music. And I found a reason to keep going. Today, I am 22 years old, a recent college graduate, and I’m enjoying my life.
I’m not entirely sure why I’ve finally become ready to share information about this dark past now, but I do know that I am ready to help people who are struggling with the same things I struggled with. I wanted to create this blog, and the entire movement of Superbands itself—a joint effort by myself (who answers asks and oversees everything) and my younger sister (who focuses on the reblogging and band posts)—as a means of showing people that even though times may be tough now, doesn’t mean you cant get through it. Just take a deep breath, listen to your music, and realize that are you are important, you are worthy. Find your desire to live, even if it’s entirely through music. You can make it through the storm, I promise.
